ITINERARY

Meet and assist on arrival at Airport by your Aitken Spence Travels Representative, who will guide you to your chauffer driven car.

Transfer from Airport to Colombo (Approximately 45 minutes).

The rest of your day is at leisure.

Colombo, like capital cities in many developing countries, is fast changing its face. Almost overnight, skyscrapers arise from where old buildings once stood and yet in some parts, the old world charm is retained. For example, there is a 100-year-old clock tower and several British built colonial buildings, next to new hotel sites. Other places of interest are the Pettah bazaar, where one can shop for bargain, a Hindu and a Buddhist temple, residential areas, where you find stately homes of the affluent, and the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), an outright gift to Sri Lanka from the People's Republic of China.

After breakfast at your hotel you will proceed to the Sigiriya area. On route stop at Pinnawala to visit the Elephant Orphanage.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants located at Pinnawala village.
Pinnawala is notable for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2011, there were 88 elephants, including 37 males and 51 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to many of the orphaned unweaned wild elephants found wandering in and near the forests of Sri Lanka.

On completion proceed to Sigiriya and check in to your hotel.

After breakfast at your hotel proceed to Sigiriya and climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress.

The duration of the climb: Approximately 3 hours.

The 5th century Sigiriya Rock Fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was built by King Kashyapa between 477 and 495 AD. The ''Lion Rock'' is a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200 metres from the scrub jungle. The rock was the innermost stronghold of the 70 hectare fortified town. A moat, rampart, and extensive gardens including the renowned water gardens ring the base of the rock. Visit the world-renowned frescoes of the ''Heavenly Maidens'' of Sigiriya, which are in a sheltered pocket of the rock approached by a spiral stairway. These frescoes are painted in earth pigments on plaster.

On completion you will continue on to Polonnaruwa to visit the ruins.

Rising with the decline of Anuradhapura, the city of Polonnaruwa - medieval capital & crown jewel of King Parakramabahu I - remains superior proof of ancient culture & heritage blended with religious beliefs. Walk across its scattered walls of the World Heritage Site - blessed by stupas, resting Buddha statues, irrigation canals and fantastically carved Hindu sculptures - while observing the relic house - Watadage - which boasts of beautiful stone carvings.
Take a close glance and you will realize a subtle Hindu influence on architecture and statues found in Polonnaruwa. Or sit by the side of Galviharaya and observe the absolute beauty gushing out of every bend of its huge Buddhist statues. Nissankamalla Council Chamber is however, a head-spinning beauty to just sit back and observe with its swaying pillars reminding the aesthetics of a powerful kingdom which rests beside Parakrama Samudraya - sea of Parakramabahu & masterpiece of irrigation.

After breakfast at your hotel you will proceed to Trincomalee. You will check in at hotel and spend the rest of the day relaxing and at leisure.

Route: Sigiriya - Trincomalee. Drive: Approximately 2 hours.

Trincomalee is home to the fine beaches of Nilaveli, Uppuveli and the off-shore Pigeon Island. The Dive centres at Nilaveli and Uppuveli offer touriststhe opportunity to enjoy their holidays in diving, snorkeling and swimming. The Trincomalee district, referred as Gokanna or Gokarna in the historical chronicles and inscriptions, is studded with a multitude of ruins of ancient Buddhist temples and is considered a major Buddhist cultural and archaeological site of Sri Lanka. The seven hot springs at Kanniya - located a mere 8km from Trincomalee attract both locals and tourist alike.

After breakfast at your hotel you will leave Trincomalee for Passikudah. You will check in at hotel and spend the rest of the day relaxing and at leisure.

Route: Trincomalee - Passikudah. Drive: Approximately 2.5 hours.

Passikudah is a small coastal village situated in the east of Sri Lanka about 35km from Batticaloa. It is famous for its golden bay and clear, shallow waters in which you can wade 50m out to sea. It is a virgin beach and renowned throughout the country for its beauty.

After breakfast at your hotel you will leave Passikudah for the hill capital of Sri Lanka - Kandy. You will check in at hotel and rest of the day is at leisure.

Route: Passikudah - Kandy. Drive: Approximately 5 hours.

Kandy-a major tourist destination-is also known as the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. Kandy has a rich history. It was originally known as Senkadagala pura after a hermit named Senkada who lived there. Many of Sinhalese people call it Mahanuwara meaning the Great City.
The name Kandy was derived by the colonial rulers from the word Kanda in Sinhala, meaning a hill. Kandy was the stronghold of the Sinhalese kings, who promoted and protected the local culture until the city fell to the British in 1815.

Overnight stay.

After breakfast at your hotel spend the morning at leisure. Later in the evening you will embark on a city tour.

Kandy was the last capital of the ancient kings. The UNESCO protected Old Town area is a lovely place for an afternoon walk along a maze of streets leading to the Temple Of The Buddha's Tooth and the Kandy Lake. At the Upper Lake Drive Viewpoint you can see whole of Kandy magnificently framed against forest clad hills in the background.
Visit The Temple of The Buddha's Tooth in the evening, for the ''pooja ceremony'' that starts around 6:30 pm. At this time crowds gather to offer flowers and prayers to the sacred relic in the inner sanctum and the temple drummers are in full swing -a magical experience.

After breakfast at your hotel head to Ella and commence an adventurous trek at Little Adam's Peak.

Route: Kandy - Ella. Drive: Approximately 4 hours.

Duration of the trek: Approximately 3hrs.

A quaint hill side village offering the most amazing view in all of Sri Lanka, Ella is ideal for leisurely treks. Trudge through tea plantations, temple sites and waterfalls through the day.
Welcome the night with clear skies, twinkling stars and the distant glow of light houses in the Southern Coast. Though there are just a handful of guesthouses and hotels here, Sri Lankans warm and friendly signature hospitality is more than available at every place.

Upon completion proceed to hotel for check in at rest of the day is at leisure.

After breakfast at your hotel you will proceed to Yala and commence an afternoon safari at the Yala National Park.

Route: Ella - Yala. Drive: Approximately 4 hours.

Duration of the safari - Approximately 3 hrs.

First established in the 1890s as a game sanctuary, and now the most visited park in Sri Lanka, this is the area with the highest concentration of leopards in the world.
The Park is approximately 1,259 sq. kms and is the largest national park in Sri Lanka. It has a massive array of flora and fauna to see, and is a must for any enthusiast of nature, and has the added bonus of a scenic ocean frontage. The park is the home for wild elephants, wild boars, wild buffaloes, leopards, bears, deer and crocodiles.
Large flocks of migratory and indigenous birds are also found here.

On completion you will check in at hotel and rest of the day is at leisure.

After breakfast at your hotel you will proceed to commence a city tour of Galle.
Upon completion you will return to hotel.

Galle is located in the south-western part of Sri Lanka and is an important city in the region.
The city remains the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese during their period in the country. The Galle Fort, today, is a world heritage site and the most important landmark in the city. The Dutch Museum and the Dutch Church are two other significant attractions. Galle has also made a name for itself for its intricate lace and ebony carvings.
